MIOX and Operation Blessing Bring Safe Drinking Water to Philippines for Disaster Relief

Typhoon Haiyan

MIOX Corporation, the industry leader in on-site chemical generation technology, has partnered with Operation Blessing International (OBI), one of the largest charities in America, for disaster relief efforts in the Philippines following Super Typhoon Haiyan.

Six (6) MIOX BPS portable sodium hypochlorite generators and one (1) SANILEC 6 sodium hypochlorite generator have been deployed to the Philippines by Operation Blessing International.  The seven (7) clean water treatment technologies have the combined capacity to treat approximately 500,000 gallons of water each day, providing safe drinking water in life-threatening conditions.

Operation Blessing International President, Bill Horan, confirms lack of safe drinking water is one of the biggest problems facing the relief efforts.  With raw sewage overflowing as a result of the typhoon, water supplies are contaminated.

”One of the most pressing challenges in a major disaster such as this is providing clean water,” says Horan. “These state-of-the-art MIOX units will be of immeasurable help in our efforts to provide clean drinking water for tens of thousands of people each day.”

MIOX President & CEO, Craig Beckman, said, “We are honored to partner with Operation Blessing in its efforts on the ground in the Philippines.  At our core, MIOX is about safe water disinfection and clean drinking water.  Everyone wants to help in times of great suffering, and we are glad to be a central part of Operation Blessing’s strategy in Tacloban.”

Typhoon HaiyanOperation Blessing VP of International Operations, David Darg, is on the ground in Tacloban, Philippines preparing for the arrival of the portable sodium hypochlorite water treatment systems. David, who has been a first responder to over 100 natural disasters globally, says the level of suffering in the Philippines is among the worst he has ever witnessed.

“There’s a tremendous amount of aid that is ready to pour into the country, but the port was destroyed and the local infrastructure severely damaged,” said Darg. “This is making the transportation of aid to the hardest hit areas near impossible.”

According to Darg, the most important thing right now is to provide clean water.

Operation Blessing Uses MIOX On-Site Chemical Generators To Aid Typhoon Haiyan

Operation Blessing International President, Bill Horan, confirms lack of safe drinking water is one of the biggest problems facing the relief efforts.  With raw sewage overflowing as a result of the typhoon, water supplies are contaminated.

”One of the most pressing challenges in a major disaster such as this is providing clean water,” says Horan. “These state-of-the-art MIOX units will be of immeasurable help in our efforts to provide clean drinking water for tens of thousands of people each day.”

In the video below, Horan showcases the a MIOX BPS portable sodium hypochlorite generator and how the people in the Philippines are utilizing the technology to provide safe drinking water to those impacted by Super Typhoon Haiyan.

The MIOX Brine Pump System (BPS) used in the video weighs under 12 kg (26 lbs.) and can be set up to start generating disinfectant within a matter of minutes.  The unit can treat up to 45 cubic meters (12,000 gallons) of water per day if operated continuously. Power requirements are 12 VDC, making it possible to use solar, generator, or battery power, as well as power from the wall. BPS units were utilized in both Sri Lanka and Thailand after the tsunami for drinking water treatment and medical equipment sterilization, in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina for cooking and shower water, and in in Haiti after devastating Hurricane Isaac.

About MIOX On-Site Generators

MIOX offers a comprehensive line of on-site disinfectant generators designed to solve virtually every water disinfectant treatment challenge. Field tested and proven, MIOX generators are available in a variety of sizes, and chemistries and are scaleable to produce some of the highest volume and rate demands on the planet.

On-site generation of chemistries for water disinfection is a technology that is based on decades-old scientific principles.  MIOX on-site generators (OSGs) use an electrolysis process that takes a solution of sodium chloride (salt) and water and applies electricity, to produce chlorine-based disinfection chemistry.

Expertly designed MOS and sodium hypochlorite generators from MIOX give customers the freedom to produce disinfectants in the amount they need, when they need it.  Because of the benefits that OSGs provide, many industries are switching to on-site chemical generation and moving away from more traditional chlorine delivery systems such as chlorine gas, concentrated sodium hypochlorite, and bulk calcium hypochlorite.

H2gO Purifier Uses MIOX MSR Purifier Chemistry

H2gO PurifierOne of the original MIOX founders, Rodney Herrington, has expanded off the original MSR MIOX Purifier Pen and developed a brand new product that has set out to be the best personal water purifier in the world.

The H2gO Purifier uses the same MIOX electrolysis process that converts brine into a sterilizing solution, using the same simple water disinfection chemistry of mixing salt, electricity and water.  The hand-held device can treat anywhere from 1/4 gallon to 5 gallons of water, making it perfect for camping trips, missionaries, first responders, families with limited access to fresh water, and even military explorations.  H2gO is highly effective, yet still economical and easy to use, requiring only common salt to make the brine.

Improving on the original MSR Pen, the H2gO Purifier has eliminated battery replacement by using a rechargeable battery similar to a cell phone and can last over 500 charges.  If you’re unable to charge the device by USB, the solar panels on the back can charge the battery as well.  The Purifier also doesn’t have any special salt requirements, allowing customers to use common table salt.  Other improvements include an expanded capacity and improved reliability.

Aqua Research is the name of the company producing the H2gO Purifier, with Rodney Herrington as the CEO.  Recently, the company just announced receiving funding from the New Mexico Angels angel-investment group in order to start production in the next several weeks.  The chemistry and technology that is used will be licensed through MIOX.  Read more about the funding announcement here.

We wish all the best to Aqua Research as they strive to provide cost-effective and sustainable water treatment to the people who need it most – those with no access to safe water.  For more information on Aqua Research and the H2gO Purifier, visit www.h2gopurifier.com
